Ji Jun: Forum of Resonance
Ji Jun’s practice has long been rooted in the experience of past and present spaces. With a playful, almost non-instrumental attitude, he creates digital worlds—retinal, three-dimensional environments, or utopian communal realms infused with nomadic energy. In this process, his works have developed a distinct pictorial aesthetic: rational in content yet resistant to commodification, expressed through imagery that is rule-bound, smooth, and impersonal—visual forms shaped by the logic of programming itself.
The new work in this project is drawn from a fixed forum within his constructed utopia. In Chinese, this “forum” originally referred to the square—a space that has served as a metaphor for grand but elusive narratives, and at times as a vessel of collective social emotion. It is both real and illusory, where the individual may seem diminished or enlarged. This grandeur crystallizes in moments of resonance—when the Forum of Resonance emerges, private stillness dissolves into the collective, and we are caught in a paradox: though faced with countless choices, the one denied is the choice of “not to choose.” That is perhaps the deepest peril of the utopian forum.
In Ji Jun’s vision, the Forum of Resonance is built, its dangers buried underground. Only through vigilance, humility, and self-reflection can this perfect forum tilt, however slightly, toward a moment of balance.
ABOUT ARTIST
Ji Jun, Born in 1987 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China, Ji Jun graduated from the Visual Communication Design Department of China Academy of Art in 2010, and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in New Media Art from the Sino-German Art Academy, a collaborative program between the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou and the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK).
Based on the experience of the past and the current space, Ji Jun creates a utopian communal field with nomadic passion by using appropriation and patchwork methods with the intention of "spontaneous use" and an almost utilitarian playful attitude: each individual manages autonomously, they consciously and voluntarily work, produce and exchange, an equal and open A picture of a "new everyday" life. In the larger vision, he is skilled at partially reconstructing ordinary, imperceptible landscapes and placing them in fictional spaces to generate new experiences for the viewer.
