Introduction of curator:
Mike Miller
He was born in Pittsburgh in 1957. He studied in the Department of Oriental Literature of Indiana University in 1976 with a doctor's degree in literature. Since 1982, he has worked in the Institute of Anthropology of the Ford foundation, and has published the outline of the history of nomadic peoples in the Hindu Kush mountains, magic and culture, and the history of Buddhism in Southeast Asia. The book, originally titled God with wings: the culture of doping, was published in 1999. The author is committed to the study of East Asian and Southeast Asian cultures, and served as cultural counsellor of the US embassy in Turkey.
One hundred thousand space has the honor to invite the famous American cultural scholar Mike Miller to plan the joint exhibition of Chinese and foreign artists of "the sixth bullet" and the opening ceremony of the short film "the sixth bullet" authorized by director Ni Hongzhao.
As the author of the best-selling book "Ecstasy", Mike Miller has carefully combed the historical gossip of human use of hallucinogenic drugs. Therefore, he claims that the so-called "Ecstasy" is actually a medium connecting point between feeling and being. Based on a similar understanding, Mike Miller has always been enthusiastic about the atypical artists in the non mainstream culture. In his opinion, the existence of these artists is like a "potion". What is valuable is not how systematic their works are, but that their lives are full of absurdity. Their works are just a small part of this absurd life We don't make a living out of it, but enjoy it.
Cai Kangyong, a famous host, once recommended the book "overpowering drugs": it can help you get an outlet from that state, so that you can get the possibility of contacting another world. In planning this joint exhibition of Chinese and foreign artists, Mike Miller intends to point out that CAI Kangyong's "another world" is actually everywhere. The name of the exhibition "the sixth bullet" is derived from the film of the same name shot by Ni Hongzhao in 1988. Although the director was banned from film for life because of this film, it has become a legend handed down by mouth.
In the film, the first five bullets of the hero (W dog) are left to his five roommates. It is a forest that kills the five people. The sixth bullet is left for him (W dog) and a crow dies for him (W dog). In artistic creation, artists will create a martyr's object. The existence of martyr's object can make him have a distance from the so-called "art". In a relatively safe scope, art will continue to produce forms. Form will produce a stable and eternal spirit.
The same logic can be found in the works of Guo Xi, an artist in the exhibition. In the work "there has never been an artist named jasvin", the artist virtualizes an artist jasvin and asks him to create for him or for him. The existence of jaswen is an absurd identity that Guo Xi found for himself. Under this identity, Guo Xi's creation of this work has been greatly free, and there is no so-called artist's work style. This is a martyr created by Guo Xi for himself. Jaswen did what he wanted to do for Guo Xi. As the theme of this exhibition, under the authorization of Ni Hongzhao, several filmmakers and artists jointly "remake" a short film with the same name of "the sixth bullet". At 8:30 p.m. on July 18, 2015, the short film "the sixth bullet" will be screened for three times in courtyard 211 of Caochangdi art district. We hope that this movie with guns will reappear in the world and provide a new artistic opportunity.
