Qiu Shijie: New Now
On March 18, 2017, Qiu Shijie's solo exhibition "the reversal of heaven and earth" will be opened.
Qiu Shijie regards his own space, environment and the things we face every day as the basis for shaping us. However, we can not fully understand the foundation of these foundations - just like the deep underground nest, where they are "there", but it is difficult to see the whole picture. Only by injecting cement or metal solution into it can we make it visible and be captured by our senses, thus forming the foundation Our cognition. In recent years, Qiu Shijie has been exploring the process of making "cognition" manifest.
In the operation of specific works, Qiu Shijie's grasp of scale and discretion is extremely accurate, which is reflected in his early creation of "dog" and "chicken". Compared with the depiction of these specific images, the artist completely believes in intuition when dealing with the environment in which the image is located - he is more concerned about what kind of perceptual media the environment (heaven and earth) passes through. The environment (heaven and earth) to Qiu Shijie is the position of things themselves. Just like a door, its existence area is not in the door or outside the door, but always between the two. However, if the area inside and outside the door is ignored, the door will lose its logical reference.
However, the existence of the environment (heaven and earth) has nothing to do with logic. To grasp the foundation of the environment, artists need to repeatedly infiltrate perception among different media, materials and angles to mark the position, and find the medium through which "feeling" can be transmitted, just like the "cloud chamber" created by physicists to observe electrons. Because of this, the exhibition will be presented in a "Scene" way. All the materials to be built at the scene will come from the surrounding areas of Qiu Shijie's Hangzhou Studio - the trees that have been cut down, the door panels left by the demolition of the village, and the ashes of burning grass and wood garbage. However, these materials are not directly related to the theme of "reversal of heaven and earth", and the exhibition result is the final form of "reversal of heaven and earth".
