Chen Zhou: Stayed, 7
One hundred thousand space is very honored to bring Chen Zhou's personal exhibition project: calm, 7. This exhibition project is Chen zhou's fourth individual exhibition project. Chen described the project in this way: "like a bottle of turbid water, after standing for a long time, the dust settles down. The water is naturally clear and transparent, showing calm. However, the calm of water comes from the long-term standing of the bottle. The work of this exhibition is the dust. "
This exhibition is composed of Chen zhou's works of images, integrated media and installation in recent years. These works coincide with the state of "stayed", and they are also the realistic response to the Buddhist vocabulary of "no life, no death". There are two video works in the exhibition: in dream and living life. These two works are Zen thinking of life and death. The installation works are Chen Zhou's paintings of some comprehensive media in recent years and a series of "pagoda bottles" fired recently. Among them, the painting series is an intuitive experience of the end of the contemporary era, full of a sense of technological death, which is the "falling" part. The inspiration of pagoda bottle comes from a special type of "soul bottle" in the history of porcelain development. Although it is a physical object, it is intended to express metaphysics. As a Buddhist doctrine says, "all forms have knowledge", so a special form itself is a high spiritual force. On top of this, it gradually developed, echoing the Buddhist Stupa, and inscribed with Buddhist mantras on the bottle, which is the part of "Ascension". Chen juxtaposes these two parts to present his understanding of the present world, and at the same time contains a wish that all people can be liberated.
This exhibition is the first time for artists to express spirituality directly. In the past, artists have made more efforts based on reality. We can see these "realities" through his past exhibition projects. From a series of video works taken by Chen Xi in 2009, we can see the artist's expression of the relationship between reality and performance (the second reality) In the 2017 work "imitating life", we can see the artist's state of "spirit" based on the reality. The work was awarded the New Vision Award in CPH: DOX Film Festival, Asia Perspective award in DMZ Film Festival, and was selected into the official selection of 61st BFI London Film Festival.
