Gao Suodu: Empty Hands
One hundred thousand space is honored to bring the solo exhibition of gossotu: Hedong and Hexi. This is an exhibition about "questioning", and also a record of artists' searching for themselves repeatedly in recent years.
This exhibition mainly presents what Gao Suo had seen, thought and painted during his life in Baotou. Gao Suo Du was born in Baotou City, Inner Mongolia. He was admitted to Tianjin Academy of fine arts. After graduation, he lived in Beijing for eight years. Facing the increasing cost of life and creation, as well as the increasing questioning and thinking of "where should I stand in the end", Gao Suo finally chose to return to Baotou to live and create.
As an 80 generation artist, before he went to university, he lived in a relatively closed home environment. After entering the University, multiple channels of cognition of the world have been opened. The different cultural and visual elements between the East and the west, the past and the present, have created a multi-layer space-time of reality and spiritual world. As a result, just as most people's feelings for "Hometown" begin to shift, Baotou has become a "Hometown" that can never go back to. This chaotic perception of time and space brings about a great sense of weightlessness and tearing in psychology. How to get along with it peacefully is a problem that Gao Suo Du has been solving in Baotou for nearly four years.
These four years are also the intensive period of gossotu's works. The huge assimilation of his hometown culture prompted him to take up his camera to capture the real but bizarre scenes, which is not only a kind of record, but also a kind of self reminding. He also ruminated like an old cow to digest the relationship between the West and the East, Beijing and Baotou. However, the dislocation between reality and psychology can not be erased, which makes his lens like "sleepwalking", shuttling and echoing in the "realistic dream" in the streets and lanes of Baotou.
In this exhibition, Gao Suo do not pursue the accuracy and spirituality of artistic expression. He prefers to present the cultural tearing like "sleepwalking". Just like the photographic works in the exhibition, they are based on the efforts of the second reality made by Baotou's real life. These "realities" repeatedly remind the artists of their actual existence, but they are not so "real". As a result, Gao Suo, who seems to have no choice but to record and present, realizes his universal emotional inquiry.
